UTSA prof delivers lecture
Edward R. T. Tiekink, Ph.D., a crystallographer at the University of Texas-San Antonio, gave a lecture on the Pharmaceutical Use and Development of Bismuth Thiolates on November 6, 2005 at the SMED AVR.
Dr. Tiekink spoke on the work he and co-workers carried out while at the National University of Singapore. Bismuth thiolates were found to suppress tumor growth, but also led to necrosis. In an interesting development, the compounds also had an effect on viruses leading researchers to pursue applications related to the rampant avian flu.
Dr. Tiekink also invited students to pursue studies at UTSA.
'American Idol' comes to USC Chem
They sang, they grooved, they conquered. In an unprecedented Christmas party where no one went home early, the department held competitions among faculty, staff, students and working scholars from which the best clashed in a final round in the standard, novelty and rock genres.
With guest judges Wilbert Wee (B.S. Chem. 2002), Marietta Lim (wife of Dr. Lim), and Jun Posas (husband of Gail), the idols for at least a year are Camilo Tabinas (standard), Gianna Loise Lapinid (novelty), and Joel Locaylocay (rock).
Lim is new CCS head
Patrick John Y. Lim, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Chemistry, was elected as the new President of the Cebu Chemical Society during the General Assembly held on October 22, 2005 at the 1521 executive room of San Miguel Corporation. Lim succeeds Ramon S. del Fierro, Ph.D., current Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, as president of CCS. Dr. del Fierro remains a member of the Board of Directors.
Also elected to the Board are faculty members of the department, namely Ma. Ligaya S. Suico, M.S. (secretary), Eugene T. Bacolod (treasurer), and Leonila N. Adarna, M.S.
Javier tops Chemist Licensure Examination
Alnald C. Javier, B.S. Chem. 2005, topped the Chemist Licensure Examination with an average of 92.00 besting 263 other successful examinees from all over the Philippines.
Javier graduated summa cum laude and was also given the BPI-DOST Science Award. He was named as one of the Outstanding Graduates of his class. During an awarding ceremony, the University presented Javier with a brand new computer, including a 17"-LCD monitor and a colored printer. Fr. Teodoro P. Gapuz, SVD and Fr. Vicente L. Uy, SVD, the vice presidents for academic affairs and finance, respectively, presented the award. Also recognized during the ceremonies were new registered chemists Jocelyn L. Lagahid and Evelyn B. Ty.
