Dean's Message

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Carlos, an academic community engaged in advancing discovery, dissemination, and application of knowledge in the traditional areas of liberal arts and sciences and in emerging areas of study.  As a community focused on learning and teaching, it is guided by an unshakeable commitment to humanistic values and ethical conduct, by a creative and entrepreneurial frame of mind, and by an awareness of the global context in which the university exists.  As the core of a great university, the college is dedicated to excellence and to providing our students with exceptional learning and research opportunities.

All students at the University of San Carlos attend classes either to major in one of our academic departments or to fulfill mandated requirements of the University’s General Education courses.  Hence, the College of Arts and Sciences remains the heart and soul of the modern University.

The College is dedicated to helping students develop analytical and communication skills, critical thinking, creative abilities, spirituality, computational and problem-solving skills, and a sense of civic responsibility needed in an increasingly complex society.  It strives to provide them with a rigorous grounding in their chosen fields, an awareness of the interconnectedness of disciplines and an exposure to the discovery of knowledge.

We constantly challenge our students to perceive patterns in complexity, render reasoned judgments, make wise choices under conditions of uncertainty, and join with others in the pursuit of common endeavors.  

As Dean of the College, it is my commitment, duty, honor and great joy to provide a vibrant learning venue supportive of its goals, an environment where faculty members can do their very best scholarship and teaching at the same time enjoy rewarding personal and family lives;  where students are challenged to do their best academic work and delight at the same time in the extracurricular and service opportunities that the university offers, and develop deep and meaningful friendships that last a lifetime. 

The resources of this university are enormous.  Students are challenged to do their very best as they pursue new knowledge and ideas through a variety of formats and venues.  These may include formal lectures and laboratories, web-based resources and activities, workshops and in-service learning, independent study, directed readings, research and other creative works, or any of the other wonderful experiences that can become part of their curriculum.

The students are encouraged to think that their stay in the college is a time of great intellectual exploration and recognize that it is a major stage in their growth as a person. 

I thus invite prospective and current students, faculty, staff and potential donors and alumni not only to visit our Website but also to participate in the intellectual and cultural exchanges sponsored by the college.
