Department of History
Graduate Program
Master of Arts in History
The MA in History program is a specialized study in the field of Historical Research, Historiography, and Public History. The program requires a total of 12 units of Required Courses, 18 units of Major Elective Courses, and 6 units of Thesis work.
The required courses provide the students with the foundations of the Philosophy and Methods in the study, research and writing of History in general, and Local and Oral History in particular. The elective courses provide a venue for an in-depth analysis of selective problems in Philippine History and Historiography as well as global historical developments. Moreover, the elective courses expose the students to comparative and parallel studies of the historical developments in areas and regions outside the Philippines. Elective courses in Public History, Cultural Resource Management, and methods in teaching in History are included to provide the students with skills in these areas.
The student must pass a written comprehensive examination after completing the required courses and 18 units of the major electives. The examinations are prepared and conducted by a panel from the Graduate History Faculty. A student who fails in the comprehensive examination twice will be required to enroll in 9 units of refresher courses.
The thesis is the final requirement for the degree, with strong preference for Local History. This is dictated by the proximity of primary sources and the apparent lack of scholarship in this area.
