Admission Requirements | Retention Policy | Probationary

Admission Requirements

  • New First Year
    • A high-school grade in English of at least 85
    • IQ test of at least 88 (average)
    • EPT (English Proficiency Test) score of at least 65% (average), and
    • Form 137, original copy (NSO authenticated) Birth Certificate, 2 pieces  2x2 colored photo
  • Transferees
    • Take the IQ and EPT exams
    • Proceed, if qualified, to the DOLL Chair who will review the transcript based on the retention policie
  • Shiftees
    • Secure a Shiftee Form duly signed by the chairperson of his/her original department
    • Submit print out of the previous semesters’ grades showing an average grade of 1.8 for all the English/Literature/Speech subjects (but not one grade lower than 2.5) or a grade of 2.0 in ach of these subjects, and no NC or failure (5.0) in the general education subjects

Retention Policy

A. New Regular Freshman

1st Year: First Semester

  • a regular freshman English major must earn a grade of 2.5 or higher in each of the English/Literature/Speech subjects specified in the curriculum
  • S/he should not incur a failure (5.0) or NC in two general education subjects specified in the curriculum

1st Year: Second Semester

  • a regular freshman English major must earn either:

- an average grade of 1.8 (English/Literature/Speech)
  granting that not one grade is lower than 2.5

  • S/he should not incur a failure (5.0) or NC in two general education subjects specified in the curriculum

2nd Year: First Semester & Second Semester

  • a regular sophomore English major must get an average grade of 2.0 in English/Literature/Speech subjects, and that no grade from any of these subjects should fall beyond 2.5.
  • S/he should not incur a failure (5.0) or NC in two general course subjects specified in the curriculum.

3rd Year: First Semester

  • a regular junior English major should have an average grade of 2.0 in the major subjects, and that no grade from any of these subjects should fall below 2.5.

3rd Year: Second Semester

  • a regular junior English major should not incur a failure (5.0) or NC in two general major subjects specified in the curriculum.

4th Year: First Semester & Second Semester

  • a regular senior English major who reaches this level is immune to these policies, thus when s/he fails in the major and general course subjects, she is allowed to re-enroll according to the rules of the USC registrar.

B. Shiftees and Transferees

Once assessed, shiftees and transferees are subject to the retention policies applicable to their academic level.

C. Probationary

  • English majors who cannot meet the required grades will be placed on probation for a period of one semester. They will be put in the probation’s list and will be monitored by their year-level advisers.
  • Once their grades during the probation period are within the required level, they are lifted off from the probation list.
  • When they fail to meet the required grades during the probation period, they are advised to shift to another field.
  • Regular English majors, shiftees, and transferees can only be on probation once in the duration of their academic program.
