Envisioning a Brilliant Future for Young Filipinos

Overview
Young Einsteins coming from the Philippine South are drawn, by some kind of gravity, into the USC Department of Physics. Here, the Antimatter really matters and people don’t talk about the Big Bang in whispers. You are, after all, in one of the pioneering and leading academic institutions in Physics in the country. In fact, some German priest-scientist, who himself was taught by a Nobel-prized nuclear physicist back in his country, pioneered nuclear research in the Philippines during the 1950s. So this Department has a long contribution in the field, which goes back to the days of Albert Einstein.

Today, the Department continues to aim for stellar achievements in the field of Physics research. It maintains cutting edge instruction through its course offerings which consist of one undergraduate program (Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics) and two graduate programs (Master of Arts in Physics and Master of Science in Physics).

The nerds here have such big minds—you can’t keep the whole universe out of their heads.

Aims & Objectives
The Department of Physics aims to:
  • improve Physics education in the Engineering, Sciences, Arts and other fields within and outside the University;
  • produce graduates equipped with solid scientific background as foundation for careers In the academe and industry;
  • produce scientists imbued with strong Christian values, morally conscious of their responsibilities towards society and the environment;
  • provide students with basic understanding of Physics to enable them to apply this knowledge to real-life situations;
  • impart to students the essential skills and competence in teaching Physics;
  • develop among faculty and students the scientific skills and attitudes necessary in pursuing research in Pure and Applied Physics.
