Department of Psychology
Overview
The University of San Carlos Department of Psychology offers one undergraduate (Bachelor of Science in Psychology) and three graduate programs (Master of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Master of Arts in Social Psychology, and Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology).
Objectives
The Department of Psychology, cognizant of the mission goals of the University and of the College of Arts and Sciences, aims to achieve the following for the undergraduate program:
- Provide students with basic and advanced knowledge of psychological theories, principles, and laws, to make them scientifically grounded and prepared in theory, research, and practice.
- Prepare students with employable conceptual, methodological, interpersonal skills and competencies in the helping profession and become potential human resource assets in various settings: school, institutions, community, industrial, research centers, and other organizations where behavior science is an essential component.
- As part of a Catholic University, the Department aims to produce young professionals who are conscious of the Christian values and ethical requirements in the practice of the profession, especially in the areas of Counseling and Psychotherapy, Psychometrics, research, training, behavior modification or the teaching of Psychology.
For the graduate programs, the M.A. in Clinical Psychology aims to train professionals who will be able to apply their knowledge and competence in the area of mental and psychological health, as a public service, or to prepare them to pursue a doctoral degree:
- To equip the students with a broad knowledge of prominent theories and principles of human development as well to make them competent in the use of psychological techniques and skills concerned with psychological adjustment of individuals.
- To inculcate in the students the clinical insight and the discipline that will develop their self-confidence in facing varied human realities, especially with people in distress.
- To equip the students with scientific discipline in the practice of clinical psychology as well as the necessary scientific tools for further research into the kinds of problems to which Pychotherapy can be applied.
The M.A. in Psychology, with concentration in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Social Psychology, aims to develop competent and effective psychologists who can respond to and satisfy the present and future needs of different individuals and organizations especially those in the region.
- To deepen the exposure of students to the various theories, methods, techniques, and principles of Psychology that is practical and relevant in different types of organizations including business and industry both in the private and public sectors.
- To develop highly-trained professionals equipped with strong scientific framework for teaching, research, and practice in Psychology for different types of organizations.
- To encourage students to harness skills and attitudes necessary for engaging in original research.
