Department of Sociology & Anthropology
Student Life
Majors automatically become members of the Carolinian Sociological Anthropological Society (CARSAS), the co-curricular student organization of the Department. CARSAS aims to enhance critical thinking among students by engaging them in discussions not only on sociological and anthropological theory and method, but also on pressing social issues.
The learning environment of SoAn students is not only marked by attendance in classroom-based instruction but also participation in fieldwork in connection with research projects pursued by faculty members. Students normally attend two semesters of social research coursework and a summer internship that generally involves field research. Moreover, students are encouraged to join at least one semester of archaeological field survey and excavation.
